In Jewish law there is a blessing that is to be said before partaking of any food. That is a rabbinic requirement. After a meal there is a biblical command as it says in the Torah “Veachaltah Vesavata uvairochtah” (Deuteronomy 8:10) once a person eats and is satiated they are required to say the blessing after meals.
